I cannot believe it’s almost 2019! This past year has been a whirlwind for the Bruening’s. In case you missed it, we built a new house (I say this because it’s all I’ve talked about for the last year;). It was one of the most time consuming, stressful things we have ever done but also one of the best things we have ever accomplished. It’s not 100% finished but will be in the coming months.
We also took a kick ass vacation to the Pacific Northwest. This included a road trip from Seattle to the Gorge in Washington to see Dead and Company perform and on to Eugene, Oregon to see Dead and Company again and finally driving down the coast of California to do some sightseeing in San Francisco.
One of the biggest events for us in 2018 was our son graduated from college! We are so proud of him on this major accomplishment in his life.
I’m not going to lie, 2018 was not all rainbows and butterflies. I still struggle regularly with anxiety. I have learned that it is perfectly normal to have anxiety and it’s not a sign of weakness. I am dealing with it in my own way and not medicating. My work life was a struggle for me this year and i can’t quite figure out why. I’m hoping 2019 will be better in this department. I learned that loyalty, whether it be in the workplace or in friendships doesn’t mean as much anymore, but playing the game does. I don’t play games. I thought I could, but I cannot. That will definitely change things going forward.
We are really excited for 2019! The hubs and I have a little getaway planned for late January. We will be traveling Indiana to see Dead and Company this summer and hopefully since the house is pretty much complete, we will get to take the boat out and spent a little time on the lake. I really missed that last summer. Who knows what else the Bruening’s will be doing in 2019. Stay tuned!
I’m sure that i’m about to sound like a million other people when I say: “how are the holidays here already?!? wasn’t it the 4th of July like a week ago??? since christmas is approaching at lightening speed, I felt it was time for a gift guide to give you all sorts of gift giving ideas. i’m not gonna lie. I either already own the items i’m going to talk about in this post or I really, really, really want to buy them for myself….or if you are reading this, feel free to get them for me;) (i’m not even joking…i’ll send you my shipping address ☺️). I tried to find some really affordable options and threw in a few things that are a little more pricey. seriously, some things you just have to pay more for. it’s christmas, don’t be a cheapskate;). Make sure to read all the way to the end because there will be a giveaway you won’t want to miss!
Sephora has some of the best gift sets for anyone on your list that love everything makeup and beauty. Here are my top pics all under $25. (I bought the lipstick set and it is amazing!!)
Baublebar has some amazing jewelry pieces right now that would make perfect gifts.
I don’t know about you but I love receiving gifts from nordstrom. They too have great gift items for anyone on your gift giving list. I am all about cozy things and I might just have to get the faux fur throw for myself 😉
Anthropologie is the best place to purchase monogrammed gifts. Here are my favorites all under $40.
The next few products I’m including, I purchased recently when we moved into our new house. I love them so much that I had to share them with you. I think if you are wanting to get someone a more practical, very useful gift these three items would be perfect! keep in mind, they are a little more on the expensive side.
This dish drainer is so functional! The wine glass drying attachment is what sold me on it!
When we moved to our new home, I was dead set on getting one of those robot vacuum cleaners. Well I changed my mind on that and decided I wanted a lighter upright vacuum instead. I thought about a Dyson, but I really wanted to just get a corded model. I found this one by shark, and it works perfectly and it has a super long cord.
I needed a new floor steamer and found this one at target. It has so many attachments and I can even steam the marble in my bathroom. That’s a major plus for me!

It’s time to pull out those sweaters, ‘cause fall is finally here!! I honestly didn’t think it would ever cool off. As you may or may not know, I work in a clothing store and we have been getting sweaters, cardigans, sherpa, etc in our stores since July! I have had all the fall feels for months now!
Fashion is definitely my passion and that includes how I accessorize my outfits. I never leave home without adding earrings, necklaces, bracelets and of course a watch to complete my look. My go-to watch is my Apple watch. Well, that was until I received my Jord Watch (pronounced Yode…like Yoda with no “a”). I love wearing unique pieces that really make a statement. I also want a timepiece that will go with literally anything I wear. I have worn my Cassia series watch every since i got it. And guess what? It really does go with everything! I have the zebra and ivory style watchand there are three other colorways available. Another fact about Jord: they are based out of St Louis, MO. That is so close to where I live! I love the fact that they are local to my area. SInce this watch is more minimalistic it really looks great styled with bracelets, but I actually like the look of it on its own. Keep reading to find out how to win a $100 discount on any Jord watch!
This unique timepiece styled with a simple sweater, destructed denim and snakeskin mules is the perfect outfit to run and grab a coffee with your girlfriends or a date night with your hubs;)
Cardigans and beanies are pretty much my staple items for fall and I love how my Cassia series watch looks styled with them. The colors of the watch and this outfit flow together perfectly!
Wearing faux leather leggings and a leopard sweater (both are must-haves this fall) makes me feel kind of sassy! I absolutely love how this wood watch looks with this outfit. This is my new favorite combo!

hello friends! I can’t believe that summer is almost over. this year has really flown by so far. the hubs and I have been busy with the new house and work the last few months, but managed to fit in a little vacay to the pacific northwest. it was amazing to say the least and was the perfect getaway;). I wanted to get on here and talk about a few of the things I have loved the past few months. a couple of them are pretty new, but I already know they are going to be favorites.
Teleties literally the best pony tail holder I have ever used! they stay put, don’t give you a headache and they don’t leave crinkles or dents in your hair when you take them out. they even look cute stacked as bracelets.
I collect tons of sunglasses, but these three pair I have been wearing non stop since getting them. I love this style by Quay Australia. i’m a big fan of aviators and I like how these don’t overpower my face with their size. I recently purchased this pair of sunglasses by Diff Eyewear from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. I didn’t have anything like them in my collection and since they were on sale, I decided to give them a try. so far, I love them and I love that Diff Eyewear is a company that gives back. you can read about their mission here. who doesn’t love Ray Ban? I have been wanting this style since last summer. when I saw we got them where I work, I bought them immediately! ray bans are classic and never go out of style.
I love me a good lipstick. I picked up this Charlotte Tilbury lipstick set at the nsale and it didn’t disappoint! It came with a lip liner and two lipsticks. I love the colors and the formula of both. one shade is more of a matte finish while the other is more satiny. if you haven’t tried this brand you definitely should!
I have been obsessed with statement earrings this summer. I have picked up quite a few pairs but these are my favorites right now. I get most of my earrings from target. I love all of the Sugarfix by Baublebar that they sell there. both of the floral styles are from that line. check them out here and here. these styles are super affordable too! I had seen someone on IG wearing these tassel earrings and I thought they were so cute and would be perfect for summer. a month or two ago, I happened to see the at nordstom and picked them up. they go with everything and I plan on wearing them thru what’s left of summer and all thru fall.
t shirts and hats are staples in my closet. I love these styles by Arch Apparel. I actually live in Illinois but I am close enough to St Louis so I feel like I can rep this brand;) the camo hat is my fav right now, btw:)
you guys know i’m obsessed with everything makeup, beauty, fashion…and my hair. let’s talk about just that for a second. my hair has been thru a lot over the years. its been bleached, highlighted, cut into a pixie style and has grown down my back. its been purple, red, blond, black and every color in between. I’m also an avid user of a straightener and curling iron. combine all of that with living in the midwest (hot and humid summers and cold dry winters) and you will know what my locks have endured. my hair has always been fine and as I am getting older, it has thinned out quite a bit. all of these things I do to my hair combined with the texture of my hair and the environment I live in, finding the perfect shampoo and conditioner to help can be a challenge. I have used tons of drug store and salon brands never quite finding the perfect combo for my hair. when I was approached by Formulate, I must say I was intrigued. they claim to have “Shampoo and conditioner perfectly engineered just for you. Formulated based on your characteristics, goals, lifestyle and environment”. Doesn’t that sound awesome? admit it. you’re also curious. This brand launches today and I cannot wait to try it! make sure to follow along with me on my blog and instagram and see how its working for me. If you want to learn more about this company and brand check them out here.
I am also partnering with Formulate to do a giveaway for one free shipment of shampoo and conditioner! Awesome, right!?! click the link below to enter! (this contest ends in two weeks)
if you are as excited as I am about this new brand and don’t want to wait to see if you won my giveaway, you can use one of the invite codes below to order shampoo and conditioner that is perfectly formulated for you. the invites are very limited at this time so if you want to try it make sure to snag one of these codes. once their gone, their gone.
if you have been following me for a while, you will know that I am straight up obsessed with my eyelashes. for the last two-ish years, I have been applying strip lashes religiously. like everyday. it’s not exactly a cheap habit to have but I did it anyway. a few weeks ago, I decided no more false eyelashes. i’m actually trying to tone down my whole makeup routine and take a more natural approach. by natural I mean not wearing a ton of makeup in general. no more full coverage foundation. no more contouring. plus, it’s like 100 degrees where I live. who wants to wear heavy makeup everyday? with all this being said, I still needed my eyelashes to look good. I wasn’t used to seeing my mediocre real lashes. no matter how much eye lash primer and mascara I piled on, they didn’t look good. I knew that I didn’t want to get eye lash extensions. I haven’t heard the best things about getting that done. what I did hear was great reviews about getting a lash lift. a lash lift is basically a “perm for your lashes”. so after thinking about it, I decided to book my appointment to get my very own lash lift. my master lash stylist was jessica and she made me feel very comfortable during this process. she explained the process and told me what she was doing as she was doing it. we even made small talk which definitely put me at ease. she also texted me me all the info for lash lift aftercare from her personal number and gave me before and after photos! she definitely went above and beyond! here is how a lash lift works. first of all when you go in to your appointment, you should not be wearing any eye makeup at all. she taped down my lower lashes so they would be out of the way of the lift. while my eyes were closed, she placed a piece of tape on my eyelid. a rod was placed above my lashes. she then applied the keratin treatment on my lashes so they bent over the rod. I believe she left it on for around 5 minutes. after that, a different serum was applied to set the lashes. that stayed on for 4 minutes. finally she applied a lash tint which will last 2-4 weeks. the last lift will last 6-8 weeks. it was a very simple process. I am very happy with my results and you better believe I will be going back in 6 weeks to get them refreshed!
Before my appointment.
after my appointment
before and after photos taken by jessica. (ignore the fact that my eyebrow rubbed off in my after photo;)
have you had an eye lash lift? how was your experience? let me know in the comments below.
since tropical prints are so popular right I thought I would share this outfit with you since its one of my favorites. It’s so versatile, I can wear this to work or out on a date with the hubs. the bright colors of the tee really pop against the bright white jeans. (I have had these jeans for a year and i’m surprised they are still so white;). when wearing a bolder print, I like to keep everything else pretty basic. the bamboo bag and straw hat really just complete this look, I think. I kept it pretty simple with my shoes as well…although a pair of nude wedges would also look pretty great with this look.
